Job Description

Riverside Technology, inc. (Riverside), a leading international engineering and science consulting firm, is in search of a Fishing Gear Specialist III to support NOAA’s National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) in Pascagoula, MS.

The Position


This position will be required to support Harvesting Unit objectives including

Successful candidate will work within the Mississippi Laboratories Harvesting Systems and Engineering Branch under the Harvesting Systems Unit.

    • Work as a team member within the Gear Monitoring Team (GMT) conducting fisher outreach and training activities in the use of TEDs throughout the GOM States
    • Conduct training for federal and State marine law enforcement in the proper methods of TED inspection throughout the GOM States
    • Assist with construction/installation/testing of prototype fishing gear
    • Participate as a gear specialist during Harvesting Unit research projects
    • Perform duties operating and maintaining Mississippi Laboratory small vessel class A's, I's and II's including routine trailer maintenance
    • Perform duties operating and maintaining Mississippi Laboratory (Harvesting Unit) warehouse equipment to include: forklift, crane, saws, grinders, welders, etc.
    • Start date scheduled for January 15, 2017


This position will also coordinate and lead team activities including; communicating with shrimp fishers, fishing associations. state and federal marine law enforcement agencies, Sea Grant offices and state marine extension offices to plan TED outreach and training events. Responsible for data management from TED compliance inspections and generate comprehensive monthly reports of team activities, track and record team expenditures including scheduling maintenance of program small boats and vehicles, attend industry and government meetings and provide oral presentations of TED technology and GMT activities, summaries of observed TED compliance within the shrimp fishery.



    • Minimum 3 years working experience in a commercial fishery or net shop.
    • Minimum 2 years" experience in the management of a fisheries related project
    • Computer literate and experienced with common word processing and database management
    • Experience in net construction and repair
    • Experience in operating and maintaining small boats and associated equipment.
    • Demonstrated experience writing comprehensive reports and making oral presentations
    • Physical ability to embark and disembark unassisted between a dock and a stationary vessel and between two vessels in motion at-sea using both hands and feet.
    • Ability to pass a required NOAA background check.



    • Knowledge of selective fishing methods and technology for commercial fishing.
    • Experience in conducting public outreach events and public speaking
    • Ability to read, write and speak Vietnamese
